I don't even know what to say -- I feel rage and DEEP despondency and sadness, and also never-ending gratitude for you, for seeing me, for writing me such a kind letter so many years ago now.

I am reading Jeanette Winterson's newest, One Aladdin Two Lamps, which is a weird and thoughtful meditation on stories and reading -- well worth it, but she is not sure we will continue to read, or be able to read, in the future (probably the nearer future than we'd like). I keep thinking about this -- reading versus stories, whether reading itself has value.

Thank you for this, Patricia.

I was a dyslexic child back when that was a new thing (well, dyslexia wasn't new, the awareness of dyslexia was) and despite my abysmal early fluency I went on to be a voracious reader. I can't remember a time that books were not magical, and I can't remember a time when reading together with my mother and younger brother wasn't a part of my day. ❤️

Also - Sold a Story angered me so much that I cancelled my decades long NPR subscription.
